Prof. Gerardo Di Martino (University of Naples Federico II) will serve as General Co-Chair of IGARSS 2030 alongside Prof. Raffaella Guida (University of Surrey) and Prof. Irena Hajnsek (ETH Zurich/DLR).
The appointment follows the selection of the proposal submitted by the Local Organizing Committee to host the IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium in Glasgow. The bid was presented to the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Administrative Committee in Washington, D.C., in August 2026.
IGARSS is the flagship conference of IEEE GRSS and one of the world’s leading events in geoscience, remote sensing, and Earth observation. It brings together researchers, professionals, institutions, and industry representatives involved in developing sensors, systems, and methods for acquiring and interpreting remotely sensed data. Its European editions attract approximately 3,000 participants.
For the SIEm community, Prof. Di Martino’s role in leading an event of this scale represents significant recognition of the contribution made by Italian research in applied electromagnetics, radar remote sensing, and Earth observation data processing.
The 2030 edition will bring IGARSS back to the United Kingdom for the first time since 1988 and will coincide with the target year of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The same year will also mark the beginning of Scotland’s celebrations for the bicentenary of James Clerk Maxwell’s birth.
The Local Organizing Committee has placed this anniversary at the heart of its vision for IGARSS 2030, highlighting how Maxwell’s electromagnetic theory provides the scientific foundation for the technologies underpinning modern Earth observation. This connection holds particular significance for the electromagnetics community, linking Maxwell’s scientific legacy with the emerging frontiers of remote sensing and the global challenges of sustainability.
