Communicating electromagnetics: SIEm Masterclass on scientific public speaking in L’Aquila

Knowing how to communicate research has become a skill that complements the ability to produce it. Presenting a project, defending a funding proposal, engaging with companies and institutions or giving an interview are now part of the everyday work of those in electromagnetics — from RF and microwave technologies to antennas, from electromagnetic compatibility to Earth observation.

This is the context for the second SIEm Masterclass, “Storytelling Electromagnetics: 2. Public Speaking”, scheduled for 9–10 September 2026 at the “Luigi Zordan” Congress Centre in L’Aquila, immediately after the National Meeting on Electromagnetism (RiNEm). The initiative follows the first edition, devoted to written communication and held in Rome last winter.

The programme alternates theory and hands-on practice: handling interviews and outreach contributions, choosing the right register and being concise, TV-format simulations, dealing with unexpected questions, tight timing and stress, plus the production of short video pieces. The sessions are led by Davide Coero Borga, author and science communicator for Rai Cultura and senior technologist at INAF, and Jacopo Pasotti, journalist and science communicator working with National Geographic, Nature and the BBC.

The Masterclass is not aimed only at PhD students and early-career researchers, but at the entire community that works steadily in the field: the goal is to strengthen the ability to give visibility to a wealth of technical and scientific expertise that often remains hidden from the outside. The value for the community is twofold — advanced training in a cross-cutting skill, and an occasion for discussion and networking — with a concrete impact on the field’s capacity to engage with funders, industry, institutions and the media.

The fee is €145 and covers the training activities, the social dinner on 9 September and lunch on 10 September. On request, recognition of 1 CFU (university credit) is available. Places are limited to ensure the quality of the practical sessions.
